Back in 2021 I was contacted to start building a series of train cars for Wes Anderson’s upcoming Asteroid City movie coming out 6.22.23. Being a huge fan of his films, I knew it was going to have plenty of scale miniatures and models and be in 1/8” scale! As it turned out they ended up building an entire 1/8” scale 7.5” gauge miniature railroad set in Spain with buildings, signals, freight sidings and mountains to go along with the freight car set we built. There’s a shot below from the set with the F7 diesels that were radio controlled to pull the train heading into a scale mountain.
There were 11 freight cars in total which included four NYC 40” boxcars, two hoppers, two gondolas, two flatcars and a C40 caboose. The F-7A and B unit diesels in the movie were kits sourced and built by their effect team. Specific train cars also necessitated some new designs that we didn’t have- so it was off to the CAD workstation to design the C40 Caboose and hoppers in the movie from scratch using an O scale brass models and S.P. drawings… Once we were finished building bare metal cars they were shipped to Spain so the special effect guys could finish painting and detailing them out…
